Jen Apgar 2.0 - Failing Failure, 8yr Old Curiosity, and Mother/Daughter Podcasting e41

Wednesday Oct 18, 2017
We kind of picked up from where we left off ... but like all great conversations sometimes where you start, inevitably goes to places unforeseen and where you end, doesn't matter so much. I knew this time around even if I didn't get to my list of questions, I did want to talk a little bit more ebout EdTech conferences, learning from failure, and the new podcast project that Jen and her daughter had just started. Most of those bits do come out in the conversation, but I got to tell you, there's still quite a few more topics that I'm looking forward to hashing out with her the next time we meet.

Jennifer Orr - Always a Teacher, Purpose, and Alliances e40
Tuesday Oct 10, 2017
Tuesday Oct 10, 2017
I started only reading my Twitter feed in the very early morning hours, as I take my dog for a walk. At that time of day even the internet is fairly calm and peaceful. It feels like in the predawn hours I can actually focus on the feed and even find amazing content. Funnily, my dog will lay down and go back to sleep if I stall to long over an engaging post. And it was in this moment that I came across a blog that caught my eye. It grabbed me because of the title and I stayed for the entire whole hearted narrative. Jen has been blogging since the early 2005 and througout her writings the themes of change, student advocacy, and equity come through loud and clear. Her tweet rattled me because of its raw questioning of 'Am I in a rut?' A truth in education is that the life of teacher can be long and satisfying, but what happens to a person when change simulatneously becomes necessary and hard to envisage. Please check out Jen's blog at http://jenorr.com/ for this post and many other great reads.

An EdCan Network Conversation - Getting ACCESS e39
Monday Oct 09, 2017
Monday Oct 09, 2017
On Wednesday October 4th, I shared the story of the program I co-facilitate, the kids that I support, and the context of challenge that wraps around our work.
In the room were members of the EdCan Network, comprised of EDU upper leadership from across Canada - directors, superintendents, and corporate heads listened as I unfolded my lived experience from the classroom.

I've been thinking about the times in my EDU career when I was witness to a kind of deeper truth or source code. The moments tend to be fleeting and sometimes I missed large parts because my mind was launchd into in a different place than my ears. But, when I held the moment and flowed with the conversation I walked away feeling the satisfaction of truely learning a lesson.
My talk with Michelle, a clinician leading a Mental Health strategy for a large school board, was one of the moments where I think I got a peak behind the curtain and started to understand the inner workings of education. And a truth that emerged was that we just might be coming to place where curriculum, classroom, and mental health are seen as equal and connected components of a larger, life continuum.

Jen Apgar - Getting Reflective, Why Podcast?, and Productive Struggle e37
Friday Sep 15, 2017
Friday Sep 15, 2017
I got a process for approaching a podcast. I usually lurk the blogosphere and twitter profiles once I find a person who piques my interest. After that my mind races, I shape questions, and then connect with the potential guest. Remarkably, cold calls and boundless curiosity have brought phenomenal people into my little EDUniverse. The plan for talking with Jen was broad and there were a few checkpoints that I thought we could pass through. As it happens when you meet a kindred thinker, single topics are enough. Jen and I got into the complexities of teacher reflective practice and never completely got out...and I loved it.

Jocelyn Kervin is getting a new job! e36
Wednesday Aug 30, 2017
Wednesday Aug 30, 2017
When I last chatted with Jocelyn she was heading up a thriving music program and firing on all cylinders -keeping her department connected to the school, the local community, and to each other. In September, she transitions into a new position with her school board as a Digital Literacy Resource Teacher. How she shifted her thinking and sense of self from classroom teacher to board based consultancy is an awesome story.

Tanya Murray - Playing and Learning Outdoors e35
Tuesday Aug 22, 2017
Tuesday Aug 22, 2017
I have tried in the past to get my classrooms outside. Sometimes it works others not so much. I can't say for sure what anchors a learner to one ideal space for learning, but I can definitely say that I crave to read and write while sitting under a tree moreso than in a desk under fluorescent light. Search out the key term 'classroom' online and you are pretty much guaranteed to find standard stuff. Chairs, tables, and a whole lot of indoor spaces fill the top hits. Tanya is an educator that is bringing a different pov to learning design and learning spaces. Part of her new position with her school board is just that - making the outdoors accessible to all learners. And in the short convo we had, I definitely broadened my understanding of what's possible while playing and learning outside.

Chasing Squirrels and Que sera Sarah? are talking Disney e34
Tuesday Aug 08, 2017
Tuesday Aug 08, 2017
I have been embarrassingly slow to embrace my inner Mickey. Just recently the full weight of my upcoming Disney family trip kinda crashed my system. In spite of the countless communications bounced back and forth between us and the kingdom since last November, I still had a few questions. Sarah and Shauna are probably two of the most die hard Disney fans I know. So in this episode I turned to them to get me in the right headspace to enter the Magic Kingdom.
You can find Sarah on Twitter @sarahlalondee and her blog http://www.sarahannelalonde.com/
You can find Shauna on Twitter @misspollock then check out her book http://www.creatingclassroommagic.com/ inspired by Disney and finally please keep an eye on the new school she is opening in September 2017 https://blueskyschool.ca/
